## How Poland Taxes Your Income

Poland taxes individual income progressively across two main bands, plus a solidarity surcharge for very high earners. Employees benefit from a tax-free allowance, after which income is taxed at a standard rate and then a higher rate for income exceeding the upper threshold.

In addition to income tax, employees are required to pay mandatory social security contributions \(covering pension, disability, and sickness insurance\) as well as a health insurance contribution. Health insurance is calculated based on gross pay minus social security contributions.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What is the income tax rate in Poland?

Poland uses a progressive tax scale for employment income. The basic tax rate is 12% on annual income up to PLN 120,000. Any income exceeding this threshold is taxed at a higher rate of 32%.

#### Is there a tax-free allowance in Poland?

Yes, for taxpayers settling according to the standard tax scale, the tax-free allowance is PLN 30,000 per year. This means you do not pay income tax on the first PLN 30,000 you earn annually.

#### What social security contributions do employees pay in Poland?

Employees in Poland must contribute to ZUS \(Social Insurance Institution\). The employee's share typically includes pension insurance \(9.76%\), disability insurance \(1.5%\), sickness insurance \(2.45%\), and a mandatory health insurance contribution of 9%.
