## How Malaysia Taxes Your Income

Malaysia taxes income progressively across multiple bands \(from 1% up to a top rate of 30% for high earners\). From your gross pay, mandatory employee deductions are subtracted, primarily the Employees Provident Fund \(EPF\) contribution.

The EPF contribution is typically 11% for employees below age 60 who are Malaysian citizens or permanent residents \(foreign workers are exempt by default\).

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What is the standard EPF contribution rate for employees in Malaysia?

By default, the mandatory employee contribution to the Employees Provident Fund \(EPF\) is 11% of your gross monthly salary for Malaysian citizens and permanent residents below the age of 60.

#### Does this calculator include SOCSO and EIS deductions?

Our standard calculator focuses primarily on income tax and the main EPF contribution, which make up the vast majority of deductions. Small statutory deductions like SOCSO \(Social Security Organization\) and EIS \(Employment Insurance System\) are generally capped at low amounts and are not fully modeled here.

#### Is the tax calculated on my gross income or taxable income?

Income tax in Malaysia is calculated on your chargeable \(taxable\) income, which is your gross income minus allowable tax reliefs and deductions \(like your EPF contributions, up to a certain limit\). This calculator estimates standard reliefs to give you a clear take-home pay figure.
