## How Ireland Taxes Your Income

In Ireland, most employees pay tax through the Pay As You Earn \(PAYE\) system. Income is taxed progressively across two bands: a standard rate \(20%\) up to a certain limit, and a higher rate \(40%\) on the balance. In addition to PAYE income tax, your take-home pay is reduced by the Universal Social Charge \(USC\) and Pay Related Social Insurance \(PRSI\), which fund public services and social welfare benefits.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What are the income tax rates in Ireland?

Ireland currently has two income tax rates: a standard rate of 20% which applies to income up to your tax rate band limit, and a higher rate of 40% which applies to any balance of income above that limit.

#### What is the Universal Social Charge \(USC\)?

The Universal Social Charge \(USC\) is a tax on income that replaced the health levy and income levy. It is charged on gross income using a progressive multi-band rate structure.

#### What does PRSI stand for and who pays it?

PRSI stands for Pay Related Social Insurance. Most employers and employees over the age of 16 make PRSI contributions, which go towards the Social Insurance Fund to help pay for social welfare benefits and state pensions.
