## How India Taxes Your Income

In India, the headline number you are offered is often the Cost to Company \(CTC\), which is different from your gross salary. Employer contributions like the Provident Fund \(PF\) match and Gratuity sit between your CTC and your gross salary. **This calculator takes your gross salary as its input** and estimates your in-hand salary based on standard deductions. It does not model the full CTC-to-gross bridge or the choice between the old and new tax regimes \(we assume the New Regime, which is the default\).

Your gross salary is taxed progressively across income slabs \(with a zero-tax slab and Section 87A rebate for lower incomes\). From your gross pay, mandatory employee deductions are subtracted, primarily the Employee Provident Fund \(EPF\) contribution and state-level Professional Tax, to arrive at your final in-hand salary \(or take-home pay\).

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What is the standard deduction for salaried employees in India?

Under the new tax regime, the standard deduction for salaried individuals is ₹50,000. It reduces your taxable income by a flat ₹50,000 before your income tax is calculated.

#### How much of my salary goes to the Employee Provident Fund \(EPF\)?

The mandatory employee contribution to the EPF is generally 12% of your basic salary. This amount is automatically deducted from your gross pay every month and deposited into your provident fund account.

#### Does the calculator use the old or new tax regime?

This calculator uses the new tax regime, which is the default regime in India. It does not account for specific investments, HRA exemptions, or deductions available under the old regime \(like Section 80C\).
