## How France Taxes Your Income

France taxes income progressively across five bands \(a tax-free allowance up to €11,600, then four rising bands up to a top rate of 45%\). Employees must also pay mandatory social contributions, most notably the CSG \(Contribution Sociale Généralisée\) and CRDS, which fund the social security system.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### Does France deduct income tax at source?

Yes, France uses a Pay-As-You-Earn \(PAYE\) system called Prélèvement à la source \(PAS\). Your employer automatically deducts estimated income tax directly from your monthly salary based on your personalized tax rate.

#### What is the difference between gross and net salary in France?

Your gross salary \(salaire brut\) is your base pay before any deductions. Your net salary \(salaire net\) is the amount deposited into your bank account after mandatory social security contributions \(health, pension, unemployment\) and income tax have been withheld.

#### What are the CSG and CRDS?

The CSG \(Contribution Sociale Généralisée\) and CRDS \(Contribution pour le Remboursement de la Dette Sociale\) are mandatory social contributions applied to most forms of income in France. They are collected alongside other payroll taxes to fund the French social security system.
