## How Canada Taxes Your Income

Canada taxes income progressively at both the federal and provincial \(or territorial\) levels. Federal income tax is divided into five tax bands that increase as you earn more. On top of the federal tax, you pay provincial income tax, which also uses a progressive system but has rates and bands that vary depending on where you live.

Taxpayers are also required to make mandatory payroll contributions. Most employees pay into the Canada Pension Plan \(CPP\) and Employment Insurance \(EI\). Both of these contributions are calculated as a percentage of your earnings, up to an annual maximum cap. Before tax rates are applied, you can claim a Basic Personal Amount, which allows you to earn a certain amount tax-free at both the federal and provincial levels.

### Frequently Asked Questions

#### What is the Basic Personal Amount \(BPA\)?

The Basic Personal Amount is a non-refundable tax credit that every Canadian resident can claim. It allows you to earn up to a certain threshold without paying any federal income tax. Each province and territory also has its own separate basic personal amount for provincial taxes.

#### What are CPP and EI deductions?

The Canada Pension Plan \(CPP\) and Employment Insurance \(EI\) are mandatory payroll deductions. CPP provides a basic benefits package for retirees and disabled contributors, while EI provides temporary income support for unemployed workers. Both deductions are capped at an annual maximum.

#### Why are my taxes split into federal and provincial?

In Canada, income tax is administered at both the federal level and the provincial or territorial level. While the Canada Revenue Agency \(CRA\) collects both taxes together for most provinces, they are calculated using different sets of rates and brackets depending on where you live.
